Slow or Stop Glaucoma’s Progression — With Our Help

You need advanced solutions to manage glaucoma best: that’s why Eyecare Specialties uses the latest technologies for screening and treatment.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma describes a condition where the pressure inside the eye — intraocular pressure (IOP) — increases. This can permanently damage the optic nerve and cause irreversible vision loss.

The good news is that glaucoma’s progression can be slowed or halted when it is caught early and managed properly. But, many symptoms of glaucoma aren’t noticeable until untreatable damage has been done. That’s why it’s incredibly important to regularly get eye exams to screen for glaucoma, especially if you’re at-risk.

Types of Glaucoma & Their Symptoms

The two primary types of glaucoma are known for having different rates of progression and notable symptoms. There are several other forms of glaucoma, but these two are the most common:

  • Open-angle glaucoma is the most common kind and is caused by drainage canals in the eye slowly becoming clogged over time. There are very few symptoms until vision loss, like blind spots or tunnel vision, occurs.
  • Angle-closure glaucoma is a rapid rise in IOP caused by sudden blockage of drainage canals. This has more intense symptoms, including headache, pain, nausea, and blurry vision, and requires immediate treatment.

Glaucoma Causes & Prevention

It’s unknown what exactly causes glaucoma to develop, but several factors increase your risk for glaucoma. You should be regularly tested for glaucoma if any of the following describe you:

Glaucoma Prevention Center
  • Over 60 years old
  • African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Asian
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Diabetic
  • Severely nearsighted
  • Use specific medications, such as steroids
  • Have certain eye diseases, or systemic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease
  • Have had eye surgery or a serious eye injury

While you may be able to get certain diseases under control or change your medication, many of these factors are out of your control. The best prevention is to schedule regular eye health exams to ensure that if glaucoma does develop, it’s noticed quickly, and treatment can begin as early as possible.

Get Ahead of Glaucoma: Opt-In to the Optos Sight Safety Scan

Our eye doctors have the tools to notice high eye pressure early, but we also have a way to notice things that may lead to increased IOP: our Sight Safety Scan, using Optos high-def inner-eye imaging. Request yours with your next eye exam!

Our Glaucoma Evaluations and Treatments

At Eyecare Specialties, our glaucoma doctors use a range of state-of-the-art medical testing tools and techniques to inspect your optic nerve for any damage and measure your IOP.

Some of these more extensive tests may include a visual field test to check for blind spots in your peripheral vision, an ultrasonic wave test to measure your cornea thickness for irregularities, and advanced imaging of your optic nerve to more closely look for any new issues or damage.

In many cases, medications and eye drops that lower IOP are enough to slow or halt the progression of glaucoma, so long as they’re used as instructed. In other cases, laser procedures or minor surgeries may be recommended in conjunction with eye drops and medication. If you have this condition, our Missouri glaucoma doctors will help you develop a personalized treatment plan.
